Just off the corner of the Courthouse Plaza, The Hike Shack outfits everyone from first-time day hikers to backpackers and climbers. Expect camping and backpacking gear, sleeping bags, outdoor apparel, climbing equipment such as harnesses, and trail maps. The specialty is footwear: staff take time to fit hiking boots and trail shoes in person.
The shop first opened in 2004. In October 2011 a group of Prescott locals who had gone to high school together (Amanda Lane, then Foster, plus Raigan York-Fundalewicz and Toby and Kam York) bought the business. They kept the name and moved it to its current Montezuma Street storefront, roughly three times the size of the original. Amanda had already been managing and buying for the store, and Raigan is a fifth-generation Prescottonian.
The Hike Shack stays tied to local outdoor life and regularly sponsors races, school events and teams. In 2026 it’s the sponsor of the Highlands Center for Natural History’s Hiking Spree: hike (or attempt) eight of ten listed trails by December 7 and you’re entered in a raffle for a $300 Hike Shack gift card.
Tips for visiting
- Leave time for a proper boot fitting instead of a quick grab-and-go.
- Heading out on the Hiking Spree? The trail maps and checklist are on the Highlands Center website.
- Unused items in original packaging can be returned for store credit within 30 days with a receipt. Climbing gear, books, maps, food and fuel are final sale.
